Tips For Finding Great Monologues

Acting

By: Kristina Anderson, Barbizon International

When selecting a monologue to perform for an acting class or an audition, it’s important to spend time thinking about the best way to showcase your talent and versatility as an actor. A good monologue will tell a story regardless of how much or little time you have on stage.

It’s important to choose a monologue that speaks to you while trying to stay away from pieces that are too mainstream and may be overdone which can unintentionally put you in comparison with another actor your audience or the casting director has already seen.

Monologues that combine drama and comedy will allow you to touch on a few different emotional points with your audience and draw them into the story you are telling. It’s also important to be sure the monologue you are reading fits a type of character you could believably play to keep your story relatable.

Finally, be sure your monologue highlights your acting ability. If you have other skills like dialects or stunts, note them in your resume but save them for a followup piece. The monologue you decide on should be a showcase of who you are as an actor and what your strengths are.
