Parent’s Guide: Supporting Your Teen’s Dream to Become a Model or Actor

At Barbizon

When your teen tells you they want to become a model or actor, it can be both exciting and overwhelming. You want to support their dream — but also make sure they’re protected, prepared, and pursuing it for the right reasons. Here are some parent tips for child actors and advice for supporting teen models as they take their first steps into the industry.

1. Encourage Their Confidence and Passion

The most successful young models and actors are the ones who love what they do. Encourage your teen to express themselves, practice in front of the camera, and build confidence. Remind them that rejection is a normal part of the process — it doesn’t mean they aren’t talented, it just means they need to keep going.

2. Choose the Right Training Environment

Just like athletes train before competing, aspiring models and actors need proper guidance. A modeling and acting school for teens can be an amazing way for your child to learn professional skills — from posing and runway techniques to audition etiquette and on-camera training. Look for a program that focuses on confidence, professionalism, and personal growth just as much as industry skills.

3. Protect Their Safety and Well-Being

It’s important to stay involved. Attend auditions and show up for your teen when you can, help them vet opportunities, and make sure they’re only working with reputable agencies and brands. A legitimate agency will never ask for large upfront payments or make unrealistic promises.

4. Celebrate the Small Wins

Every booking, callback, or even improvement in their confidence is something to celebrate! The entertainment industry takes patience, so remind your teen that success often comes from persistence and growth over time.

5. Keep It Balanced

Even with modeling or acting goals, school and personal time matter too. Help your teen find balance so they can stay grounded while pursuing what they love.

Supporting your teen’s dream of becoming a model or actor is a journey you can take together. With the right mix of encouragement, education, and protection, you’ll be helping them build a foundation for success — both on and off the stage.
