At just 16, Mia Elizabeth Llama is making waves in both modeling and rowing. From training at Barbizon to signing with Premiere Modeling and landing a national campaign, her journey is all about passion and perseverance. In this interview, she shares how she balances it all and what drives her to keep pushing forward.
Can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your journey with Barbizon?
Of course! My name is Mia Elizabeth Llama (Llama just like the animal LOL), and my journey with Barbizon has been an exciting one. It helped me build confidence, refine my skills, and connect with amazing people who share the same passion.
What was it like training at Barbizon and going on to compete at B-Comp?
Training at Barbizon was an incredible experience—I made so many friends, and the learning process was fun and engaging. My favorite part was modeling, especially getting to walk the runway. Competing at B-Comp was both exciting and nerve-wracking because there were so many talented people, so I was completely surprised and honored to place as 2nd runner-up! One of my favorite moments was creating a commercial about my coxbox NK which is what I use when I am coxing my boat in races—it was such a unique experience!
We saw that you recently signed with Premiere Modeling! What has it been like working with them so far?
It’s been amazing! We just recently started working together, and I had my first photo shoot for my comp cards. The team was incredibly kind and welcoming, which made the whole experience so much fun. I can’t wait for what’s next!
What first got you interested in rowing, and what keeps you passionate about the sport?
One of my friends introduced me to rowing when I was in 7th grade, and I was immediately drawn to how different it was from other sports. I love the competitive aspect and the challenge of being on the water. As a coxswain, I enjoy the leadership role and the strong connection I get to build with my team—it’s such a rewarding experience.
Tell us about the campaign you booked with USRowing—how did that opportunity come about?
Strokeside and USRowing are sponsors of my rowing team, and one day, I was talking to my mom about how amazing it would be to model for a national brand that not only supports my team but is also a major part of the sport. She decided to reach out to them, introducing me and sharing my passion for both rowing and fashion. From there, they checked out my social media and the comp card that Premiere Modeling helped me create, and everything just fell into place! It was such an exciting opportunity, and I’m so grateful to be part of it.
You’re an advocate for children with cancer—what inspired you to get involved in that cause?
Since I was little, I’ve been passionate about supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). It started with collecting donations at school and selling lemonade in my front yard—I was always finding fun ways to raise funds. Now, my mom and I are working on creating a fashion show fundraiser where kids battling cancer can be the models and walk the runway. This cause means so much to me, and I want to continue finding ways to make a difference in their lives.
You’re also in orchestra! What instrument do you play, and what role does music have in your life?
I play the violin! I was first introduced to it in elementary school, and I loved it so much that I decided to continue through middle school and high school. Music has been a great creative outlet for me, and it’s something I truly enjoy.
Do you have any pets? If so, what are their names?
Yes! I have two dogs. One is a German Shepherd-Husky mix named Ghost, and the other is a Labradoodle named Coco Chanel. They’re both full of personality and run the house.
If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Ambitious, loyal, and driven.
What advice would you give to young girls who want to follow in your footsteps—whether in modeling, sports, or activism?
Work hard, believe in yourself, and never let anyone discourage you from chasing your dreams. Stay focused, be confident, and surround yourself with supportive people who lift you up.
You’ve achieved so much at a young age. How important do you think drive and taking action are in gaining opportunities?
Extremely important! Having the motivation to take action and go after opportunities is what helps you achieve your goals. Hard work and determination open doors, and the more effort you put in, the more you’ll accomplish.
