So we’ve already talked about how important it is to show up to a model casting looking natural, your clothing should be simple and makeup and hairstyling minimal, but do you know what you need to bring with you to a casting? Casting calls can be a nerve wracking experience for most new models. You’ll want to do as much research as possible on the specific casting you are going to attend and check to see if there are any specific requirements for things you should bring with you or clothing you should (or shouldn’t) wear.

Aside from specific requirements, here are a few things you should always have with you when you go to a casting call.

  1. Lip balm and/or a light moisturizer. Especially when looking fresh faced and natural, it’s important to use moisturizer and keep lip balm on hand so that your lips don’t chap. These are key staples in a no makeup fresh look to make sure your skin appears glowing and healthy.
  2. A book or something to occupy yourself. Depending on the casting, you may be waiting for your turn in the casting room for a while. You’ll want to keep a book or your phone or some other way to pass the time on hand. This can also help distract you from getting too nervous as you wait for your turn. Just be sure whatever you bring is not so distracting that you miss anything important.
  3. A pair of flats and a pair of heels. For the most part, you’ll want to wear heels to a casting to help you stand taller and keep you aware of your posture but if you have to walk or take public transportation (like the subway) to a casting you may not want to be walking all over town in your heels. You can wear a pair of ballet flats for travel and change when you get to the casting plus it gives you options in case the casting directors want to see your natural height.
  4. A comp card and your portfolio. Your comp card will have information including your measurements and contact information that you can leave with the casting agents. You may be asked to fill out paperwork with this information, but it’s always a good idea to keep your comp card handy. Also, if you have a portfolio (a real portfolio that shows work done) you should bring that with you as well to show your diversity as a model.
  5. Something to take notes. You should have a small notepad and paper or even just a note taking app programed into your phone. That way, if you are booked on the spot, given someone’s contact information or need to take notes for anything else, you will have a way to keep track of everything you need to remember.
